Pair of pursuits keep police busy

Both drivers arrested, charged with felonies

Norman police were involved in two vehicle pursuits Sunday, resulting in the arrests of both drivers and filing of felony charges in Cleveland County District Court.

A 28-year-old Norman man twice was shot with a Taser and arrested late Sunday after a 19-mile chase at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour, police said.

According to court documents, a patrol officer was northbound on North Berry Road about 10:30 p.m. and observed a 1989 Nissan Sentra pulling out of a driveway in front of him. Shortly afterward, a woman called police and said the car had just been stolen by an acquaintance.

At speeds reaching 100 miles per hour, the officer reportedly pursued the vehicle north on Berry, west on Robinson Street, south on 24th Avenue NW, west on Main Street, south on Interstate 35 across the Canadian River, to Highway 9 West to Santa Fe, then back north to the Broad Acres Polo Club.

Police said Daniel Ray Dodson was taken into custody after driving the car through two fields, crashing into a fence and attempting to flee on foot. Police said they had to Tase Dodson twice before taking him into custody. Dodson was booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center, and charged Monday with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle; and attempting to elude while endangering others.

Also Sunday, just before 4:30 a.m., a Norman patrol officer said he observed a man driving left of center and pulled him over in the 5000 block of East Alameda Street. The officer said he asked the man to exit the vehicle, but the man refused and drove off. The patrol officer reported chasing the man at speeds of 70 to 80 miles per hour in a 50 mph zone, until the man crashed into a utility vehicle and fled on foot. The man later was arrested walking along Alameda Street, police said.

Lelis Grayson Record, 22, Norman, was charged with attempting to elude while endangering others and a misdemeanor count of driving while under the influence of an intoxicating liquor.
