TULSA — The University of Oklahoma will enter into an agreement with Oklahoma Gas and Electric company this afternoon to provide renewable energy for the university.
"This is a major initiative impacting the environment," OU president
David Boren said of the agreement this morning. The OU Board of Regents authorized OU to enter into the agreement at
its regular meeting this morning at the University of Oklahoma at Tulsa.
Boren said at the meeting that the details of the agreement will be released at the press conference at 2:30 p.m. at the Oklahoma Memorial
Union on OU's Norman campus. It is believed to involve switching OU to wind-generated power.
The board meeting agenda said this agreement will help fulfill one of the goals of the American College and University Presidents' Climate
Commitment, which Boren has signed. Elements of the agreement include OG&E-funded; scholarships, OG&E-funded; campus events and an annual hedge opportunity on a portion of the university's energy consumption.
In response, the university may have to pay a premium for the renewable energy, which could be up to 1 percent of the university's
operating budget.
"I think this truly is going to be a very very historic occasions for
our campus," Boren said.

OU President David Boren and OG&E; Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Pete Delaney will reveal details of the partnership at a 2:30 p.m. news conference on the OU campus.
In an e-mail notice sent to students, OU public affairs officials say the announcement will involve a “major, new environmental initiative.”
A news advisory from OG&E; dubs the agreement as a “new renewable energy initiative.”
