Recovery Celebration to feature Lifeline grad, success story

Transcript Staff

Norman Alcohol Information Center is sponsoring a Recovery Celebration, 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 27, in conjunction with National Recovery Month. The featured speaker will be Box Cox, Oklahoma native and author, who served 17 years in prison before his release several years ago.

The come and go event at NAIC, 215 W. Linn St., is open to anyone who supports substance abuse addiction recovery.

Cox will share a short story of his life changing recovery, beginning at 5 p.m.

Through his life experiences which included participation in NAIC's Lifeline drug and alcohol treatment program at Joseph Harp Correctional Center, Cox found recovery and a new way of living. Today, Cox is a recreational counselor at a local inpatient treatment center.

"The purpose of the event is to promote the hopeful and healing message of recovery," said NAIC Executive Director H.N. "Sonny" Scott.

Scott said participants are supporting those already in recovery and encouraging those in need of help to seek treatment.

"Learning about these issues will make it easier to break down barriers to treatment, and you will be investing in the best interests of our community," Scott said.

Refreshments will be provided.

For more information about the event or NAIC, call Teresa Collado at 321-0022 or visit www.naichelp.org.
