Norman boy dies after mishap with horse

A 12-year-old Norman boy was fatally injured Wednesday when a horse he was leading apparently knocked him down and stepped on him. The injury happened around 11:30 a.m., and the boy died several hours later following emergency surgery at Norman Regional Hospital.
The boy's name was being withheld pending family notification, police said.
According to Norman police, the mishap occurred at a pasture in the 5600 block of 120th Avenue Southeast. A family member of the boy called 911 for assistance at 11:46 a.m., and emergency personnel from the Norman Police Department, Norman Fire Department and EMSStat were dispatched to the scene.
Patrol officers provided basic emergency care until paramedics arrived. The boy was transported to Norman Regional Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery, police said.
The boy's death was reported to police shortly after 4 p.m., police said. The accident is under investigation by members of the Investigations Division, police said.
