Registration deadline looms

Friday is deadline to register to vote

Want to vote in the Nov. 7 general election? Your last chance to register to vote is Friday. Absentee ballot applications are due Nov. 1. To register, visit the Cleveland County Election Board at 122 S. Peters Ave. in Norman or call 366-0210, or the McClain County Election Board at 121 N. 2nd Ave. room 101 in Purcell or call 527-3121.



Karl Rove to speak

Karl Rove will speak in honor of Republican candidate for governor Congressman Ernest Istook 6 p.m. Monday at the Oklahoma History Center, 2401 N. Laird Ave. in Oklahoma City. A reception, which costs $500 or $1,000 with a photo, begins at 6 p.m. The speech and comments portion begins at 7 p.m. For more information or to RSVP, call 843-1110.



Cole honored by NAM

Rep. Tom Cole, R-Moore, received the National Association of Manufacturers Award for Manufacturing Legislative Excellence in recognition of his continued support of American manufacturers and a pro-growth, pro-job agenda.

According to a release, NAM presents this award to members of Congress who vote in the best interest of the manufacturing economy at least 70 percent of the time on key manufacturing votes as designated by a special committee of NAM member companies. Cole's voting record was a perfect 100 percent.



Oklahoma Politics Night announced

Oklahoma Politics Night, featuring local and state politicians from different political parties, is 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The event is sponsored by the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature and University of Oklahoma President David Boren's office.

The event will feature speeches from Edmond Libertarian Spokesman Clark Duffe, current Oklahoma Senate Minority Leader Glenn Coffee and former Oklahoma Senate Majority Leader Cal Hobson. According to a release, they will speak on the role of their respective parties in Oklahoma politics.

Boren will be keynoting the evening with an address on what the issues should be in the 2008 Presidential elections. College Republicans, Young Democrats and the Libertarian Alliance will square off in a student political debate over state issues.

The evening will conclude with a mock legislature session hosted by the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature, will cover the topics of open ballot access and a person's right-to-die.



Arkansas governor to speak in Norman

Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee will speak in Norman noon Thursday. The event is at the home of Bill and Jo Fowler, 4608 Laurel Brook Court. Cost is $50. For more information, call Jay Mandraccia of the Oklahoma Republican Party at 528-3501.



State employee's group endorses candidates

Democratic Senate District 16 candidate John Sparks and Republican House District 46 candidate Scott Martin were endorsed by the Oklahoma State Employees Association Political Action Committee.

Margaret Ruff, the committee's liaison, said the endorsements were awarded because of the candidate's support for state employees and their readiness to address issues facing agencies and employees.

"Both of these candidates have show a willingness to listen to the problems facing Oklahoma state employees," Ruff said. "We believe they will work to find progressive and effective solutions for the troubles facing state government. We look forward to working with them in the Legislature."
