PURCELL— After a nearly five-year hiatus, a plan to construct a 2,200 square-foot animal shelter is moving forward after councilmembers voted to accept a $22,440 bid with T H Rogers Lumber Company.
The money, according to the city’s Henry Welch, Jr., will be used to “purchase materials to get going again” on the site. The preliminary design sketches feature a surgery area, dog and cat holding facilities, a lobby and rooms for prospective adoptive families to bond with animals.
Veterinarian Bryan Wright and the organization, Purcell Animal Welfare Society said city employees, Booker Construction and Purcell contractor Charlie Clark will contribute labor towards the site’s construction.
“From the highway, this is going to look pretty complete,” Wright said of the new facility. “But we’ll have to continue fundraising to do the finishing work. — This is what we’ve been waiting for, any sort of city approval.”
The current city animal shelter limits the amount of animals that can be kept and therefore, be adopted out to families, Wright said. The new facility, when complete, will “quadruple” the number of animals ultimately saved from euthanasia.

Also at Monday night’s city council meeting:
• Councilmembers directed staff and lawyer Ted Pool to “proceed along guidelines authorized in executive council” and answer a $10,000 lawsuit filed against the city by NTS Systems, a technology maintenance and support company.
Pool was also instructed to answer a Department of Labor suit by former city manager Darlene Duncan. Duncan was previously awarded $86,618 in wages and liquidated damages.
