In order to address housing concerns of Hurricane Katrina evacuees, the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management has teamed up with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Oklahoma Housing Finance Agency to operate the Oklahoma Housing Help Line.
Evacuees with housing issues can call 1-800-657-3090, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for information about an interim housing program for Hurricane Katrina evacuees living in Oklahoma.
Officials said the program is designed to help evacuees establish a housing plan for themselves and their families by providing an alternative to the congregate mass care shelters or multiple family dwellings many evacuees have been residing in since leaving Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
The program provides for housing costs, utilities and furniture, if needed. One phone call to the help line begins the application process. Each applicant will receive a follow-up call from an OHFA housing specialist who will work with them on their individual or family housing plan.
Callers need to be prepared to provide their FEMA registration number, Social Security number, a contact phone number and address when phoning the help line.
