University of Oklahoma President David Boren is recovering from surgery for a herniated disc at an undisclosed hospital.
According to an OU news release, Boren had the surgery Friday and will stay at the hospital for a few days followed by six weeks of recuperation. The president was hospitalized Tuesday after experiencing severe back pain.
"The surgery went perfectly, and I expect him to do fine," said Dr. Brock Schnebel, an OU clinical professor of orthopedic surgery and OU football team physician.
The release did not specify Boren's location. Catherine Bishop, OU vice president of communications, refused to name the hospital, echoing the release's statement that Boren cannot have visitors.
Other top administrators will handle university business until the president can resume his duties full-time.
Boren said Norman Provost Nancy Mergler, Health Sciences Center Provost Joseph Ferretti and OU-Tulsa President Ken Levit will work with OU general counsel Joe Harroz and executive vice president Nick Hathaway "to ensure that the business of the university proceeds seamlessly."
