Cedar Country battles three fires

Norman — Cedar Country Volunteer Fire Department battled three fires Saturday. Nobody was injured in the fires, although two pets died during the third fire of the day.

The fire department received the first call at 6:55 a.m., Fire Chief Roger Wickey said. The firefighters responded to a mobile home fire at 9701 156th St. Damages were estimated at $40,000. Lexington and Slaughterville provided mutual aid on this call.

The second call came just a few hours later at 10:16 a.m. for a garage fire at 15291 Cedar Lane. Norman Station 5, Slaughterville and Little Axe offered mutual aid at this fire.

The third call came at 2:09 p.m. for a 8 1/2- by-30 foot travel trailer fire at 7801 180th St. Damages were estimated to be about $42,000. The firefighters were unable to assist two pets inside the trailer and both died during the blaze.

“We just couldn’t get in there to help them,” Wickey said.

Wickey said the station asked all 15 volunteers to assist if possible to help the station maintain strong numbers.

He said the weather didn’t affect the department too much, only causing more slipperiness and concern about the effect freezing temperatures had on equipment.

“We had to watch for our tanks not to freeze up,” he said.
