Norman man jailed, charged with assault

Norman — A good deed apparently didn’t go unpunished for a Norman man Wednesday night as he attempted to break up a fight.

Norman police were dispatched to 607 E. Comanche St. about 7 p.m. Wednesday on an assault. Police were told Gregory Matthew Spicer, 31, of Norman hit a woman several times in the back of the head, according to a court affidavit.

That’s when Richard Crump stepped in to stop the fight, police said. Spicer and Crump then got involved in a physical altercation.

Crump told Norman police that Spicer grabbed a brick and hit him between four and five times in the head, the affidavit stated. Spicer left the scene.

Officers later found Spicer, according to the affidavit. Spicer ran from police.

“The defendant was tased in the back, but still didn’t comply,” the affidavit stated. The defendant then ran toward another officer, who was able to gain control of the defendant and take him into custody.

Crump who suffered a large head laceration was transported to Norman Regional Hospital. Norman Regional Health System spokesperson Kelly Wells said Crump was treated and released from the hospital.

Police arrested Spicer and transported him to the Cleveland County Detention Center Wednesday night. Records show Spicer was booked into jail on assault charges.

According to court documents, prosecutors charged Spicer Thursday in Cleveland County District Court with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He also faces misdemeanor counts of assault and battery, obstructing an officer and public intoxication.

An employee at the Cleveland County Detention Center said Spicer was in jail Thursday.
