Norman — Norman police and investigators with the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s Office are working together to identify skeletal remains found late Wednesday afternoon in a wooded area near the 2500 block of 168th Avenue NE.
Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley confirmed Thursday the remains belong to a human. Two men reportedly discovered the bones.
Easley said police are not sure how long the remains had been in the area when they were found.
“We are conducting a joint investigation with the Medical Examiner’s Office,” Easley said.
He said investigators have no leads on the person’s identity. The remains have not been linked to any other crimes or missing persons reports.
“The first task is going to be to try to establish an identity,” Easley said.
He said the Medical Examiner’s Office is in charge of determining the manner and cause of death.
“It’s an unattended death,” Easley said. “That’s how it will be classified right now.”
Easley said he couldn’t comment on any specific physical evidence found at the scene.
A message with the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s Office was not returned Thursday.
