Norman — The Norman Rotary Club’s is planning its annual Bueno Brunch, a fundraising event with this year’s proceeds dedicated to two international efforts.
The event will be from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. April 10th at El Chico Restaurant in Sooner Mall. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from any member of the Norman Rotary Club or at the door.
The first effort targeted is a clean water project in Potosi, Bolivia, which is in the Andes Mountains. Potosi’s water supply has been contaminated by the mining activities in the area. This project was started by the University of Oklahoma’s Center for Restoration of Ecosystems and Watersheds, School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science. When Norman Rotary heard of the project, the group wanted to help purify the water for the residents of Potosi.
Funds raised by Bueno Brunch along with donations from the Norman Rotary Club, Sooner Rotary Club, Cross Timbers Rotary Club, Purcell Rotary Club, Pauls Valley Rotary Club, Ardmore Rotary Club, Altus Rotary Club, Elk City Rotary Club, Space Center Rotary Club of League City, Texas and the Rotary Club of Potosi, Bolivia have been matched by a grant from the Rotary International Foundation and will be supported by the Rotary Club of Potosi, Bolivia.
The second effort Bueno Brunch will support is Rotary International’s Polio Plus campaign dedicated to eradicating polio throughout the world through vaccinations. Rotary International hopes to raise $200 million for Polio Plus. Once raised, these funds will be matched by $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.
“These projects are great examples of how Rotary helps around the world,” said Tom Cooper, chairman of the Bueno Brunch committee. “We are happy to be a part of projects that will clean the water supply for the people of Potosi, and improve the health and well being of people around the world by eradicating polio.”
