ATHENS, Ala. — The nation’s “homeless” problem is getting worse, even horses are now falling into the category.
A young horse was spotted roaming in a pasture next to the Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena this week, but no one has stepped up to claim ownership.
It could be that the bay colt, which is about a year to a year-and-a-half old, was abandoned. Lt. Allen Craig said the animal will likely be sold if the owner isn’t found. He said the horse would sell for about $50.
According to the group A Million Horses, which documents abandoned, abused and neglected horses, abandoned horse cases are on the rise nationally.
“Current economic conditions are compounding the problem for cash-strapped owners who find it nearly impossible to sell their unwanted, unneeded and infirmed horses, regardless of age and condition,” the group’s website says.
“It is not unusual for lower classes of horse to sell for as little as $5, if they sell at all.”
