Norman police arrest teen for stabbing near Norman High

NORMAN — Norman police have arrested a teenager on a complaint of assault and battery with a deadly weapon after he allegedly stabbed a fellow student near Norman High School on Wednesday, according to investigators.

Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley said police arrested the 15-year-old boy Wednesday afternoon. He is accused of stabbing a 16-year-old boy in a parking lot across the street from the school.

Easley said the victim was treated at Norman Regional Hospital. He was released and recovering at home Thursday.

Police received a call about the incident about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Easley said at 12:26 p.m., someone called in and reported a “male bleeding in a car in the 100 block of East Main Street.”

He said when firefighters and EMSStat paramedics arrived, they could not find the victim. About four minutes later, police were told about a stabbing that happened in the 900 block of West Main Street.

The victim drove himself to Norman Regional Hospital, Easley said. The 16-year-old boy reported the stabbing and gave school police the suspect’s name.

Easley said school authorities detained the 15-year-old alleged suspect at the high school, after he came back onto school property and subsequently turned him over to Norman police.

“Detectives will pursue formal charges through the appropriate juvenile authorities and the district attorney’s office,” he said.

Norman Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Joe Siano said the school was not locked down at any time during Wednesday’s incident. The alleged assault happened during the lunch hour away from school property.

“We’ll take information from the police in their investigation, and then we’ll deal with that matter as we would any discipline issue, in accordance with board policy,” Siano said.
