NORMAN — After several months of construction, the barricades along Lindsey Street came down Wednesday afternoon.
With the barriers removed, traffic was able to flow down the street that had been blocked for several months from Asp to Jenkins avenues.
“Architectural and Engineering Services has been working around the clock to get the construction done by football season,” said Chris Shilling, University of Oklahoma press secretary.
Shilling said OU is in the final stages of construction south of Lindsey for a utility tunnel project beneath the street.
It had been reported earlier that the road wouldn’t be open when the Sooner football season kicked off Saturday.
Shilling had said previously, however, this wouldn’t affect game day traffic, since the corridor always is closed then.
On Saturday, Shilling said, there will be ample greenspace for tailgaters to pitch their tents along Lindsey Street, traditionally a popular spot for pre-game festivities.
“I know people were really concerned about the tailgating,” Shilling said. “The fan experience will be minimally affected by the construction that continues south of Lindsey.”
