MOORE -- Moore City Council members approved $14,000 for sculptures at Veterans Memorial Park, accepted a donation of land for a new fire station and approved more than $1.3 million in claims and expenditures during their meeting Monday.
With two of the council's seven members absent, the group voted 5-0 to approve an agreement with Shady Creek Properties Ltd. The company, City Manager Steve Eddy said, is seeking to donate land to the city for construction of a new fire station.
"The land will be donated," Eddy said. "However, as part of the agreement we will have to relocate a mailbox and rebuild an electric gate for the property owner."
Eddy said the land is at 2900 S. Sunnylane Ave.
Moore Mayor Glenn Lewis said the city "really appreciated the gift of property" for the fire station.
City officials also approved spending $14,000 for the construction of a series of wooden sculptures at the entrance of Veterans Memorial Park on Bryant Avenue.
The funds would be used for a contract with Inola artist Clayton Coss and his company, Chainsaw Sculptures by Coss, Assistant City Manager Stan Drank said.
"These should really set off the Veterans Memorial," Drake said. "The sculptor will utilize several dead trees at the park and create statues of soldiers from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm."
Coss' work can be found across Oklahoma, including Norman, where he created a statue of a Civil War soldier.
Council members also approved $1,375,825 for claims and expenditures and endorsed:
· The minutes of the previous council meeting
· A $6,000 contract with Terracon Consultants for geotechnical engineering services for the city's yet-to-be-constructed Public Safety Center.
· A project agreement with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to widen and rebuild South Santa Fe Avenue between SW 19th Street and SW 4th Street. Eddy said the city would pay 20 percent of the project's $5,737,945 cost, or about $1,154,789.
·A resolution expressing support for a TIGER grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
·A $1,500 change order with Binswanger Glass Company to add a clear coat overlay to match the Kalwall Banner Red paint on the city's new Fire Station No. 1 building. The change, Eddy said, was requested by the building's architect.
Acting as the Moore Public Works Authority, council members approved:
· The previous minutes of the regular Public Works Authority meting
· Claims and expenditures totaling $973,865.
· A $97,661 bid from Jordan Contractors Inc. for phase three of the Regency Park sanitary sewer replacement project.
Acting as the Moore Risk Management authority, the council approved:
· The minutes from the group's Aug. 3 meeting
· $1333,559 in claims and expenditures.
Acting as the Moore Economic Development Authority, the council approved:
· The minutes from the authority's July 20 meeting.
· The report from Economic Development Director Deidre Ebrey.
The council's next meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 8 at Moore City Hall, 301 N. Broadway Ave.
