NORMAN — School, community excited about game
It’s Thursday afternoon, and the excitement at Norman North High School is at a fever pitch.
Queen’s “We Are The Champions” blasts triumphantly through the school’s intercom system between classes, school secretaries are taking non-stop phone calls about Thursday’s bonfire and how much game day T-shirts bearing the “All In” championship slogan cost, and snippets of excited conversation about “tomorrow” can be heard everywhere.
“I have a lot of confidence in our team. They’ve got a lot of heart and they want this victory badly,” senior Rachel Spear said.
Support for the Timberwolves has been abundant within the school and extended beyond campus to the local community as well.
“A lot of local business, including where I work, have put ‘Go Timberwolves’ on their signs or windows,” senior Leslie Evans said.
Even at rival Norman High School, some are excited to see the Timberwolves take on Jenks.
“It’s about half and half. Half the students, some of whom are transfers from North, are very happy and excited for us, and the other half are bitter and not so supportive,” Evans said with a laugh.
The students get especially animated describing recent pep rallies featuring spectacles like neon tape-clad students doing popular dances under a blacklight and the theatrics they’ll be bringing to today’s game.
“I’ll actually be bringing my PA system. We’re going to be loud,” senior William Scearce said, smiling.
Spear and Evans said students will be “all in” with camo, noisemakers of all types and a new prop for football fans — oversized cardboard cut-outs of the player’s faces.
“Whatever happens Friday night, we love our team, we’re proud of them and it’s been a lot of fun,” Evans said.
