February MNTC Kiwanis students

NORMAN — The Norman Kiwanis Club honored two Moore Norman Technology Center Students as February Students of the Month during their regular meeting Monday.

Southmoore High School senior Andrea Cervantes is a student in MNTC’s pre-nursing class but already has industry certifications from taking the nurse aide class as a junior. She is a certified nurse aide and long-term care/home health aide, has CPR and first aid certifications and started this year already having clinical site experience.

She is a member of Health Occupations Students of America and plans to compete this semester in the HOSA Bowl competition. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, the National Technical Honor Society and the Multicultural Club at SHS.

“I’ve wanted to get into the medical field since a few years ago when all of my aunts were expecting babies at the same time. Because I’m bilingual, it was easy for me to translate between the medical staff and my family. I knew this was what I wanted to do for a career, even back then,” she said.

Dental assisting student Chandra Lamb also was selected as an award recipient. She began the dental assisting career major in August and will graduate in May. She is an active member of HOSA and plans to perform in the dental terminology category for state competition.

She will also take the Dental Assisting National Boards (DANB) this month and become a certified dental assistant by May.

She’s had the opportunity to perform six-week rotations at clinical sites with the University of Oklahoma’s College of Dentistry assisting junior and senior dental students. She also has assisted with an implant surgery and looks to work with graduate students soon, as well.

“All of this experience helps with our confidence in and around the dental office sites. This process is amazing just getting to learn how the medical and dental community works, and it feels great that I can become a part of it,” Lamb said.

She wants to work in the dental field and has considered continuing her education for dental hygiene and possibly even dental school.
