The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — The free prescription discount card available from United Way of Norman is saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in our community.

As of Dec. 31, 2012, people using the card in our area have saved more than $116,842 on everyday prescription costs for conditions such as asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and many others.

The savings don’t stop there. According to a 2011 Health Affairs study, every dollar patients spend on prescription drugs to treat heart disease and diabetes saves them $3 to $10 on other medical services.

That means people using the FamilyWize Card have saved an additional $405,941 on other medical services specifically related to heart disease and diabetes. That includes things like doctor’s office visits, hospitalizations and surgeries.

“Lowering the cost of prescription drugs allows more people to get the medicine they need when they need it,” Community Impact Director Renee O’Leary said. “The amount patients save on the cost of complications, disease progression and additional health related expenses are far greater than just the savings on the medicine. This program impacts health and financial stability, two of the areas we focus on improving in Norman.”

The FamilyWize Card is free and easy to use. Anyone can use it unlimited times, regardless of whether you have insurance or not. The card is accepted at every chain pharmacy and most independent pharmacies and requires no enrollment or personal information.

Text “family” to 700700 for a text version of the card, or visit the United Way office to pick up a card in person.
