NORMAN — The Moore-Lindsay Historical House wants your old sofa, those crystal goblets that have been packed away in boxes and haven’t seen the light of day in years and that defunked movie collection that is just collecting dust.
Erin Smith, Moore-Lindsay Historical House curator, has been busily organizing a garage sale set for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 13 at the museum, 508 N. Peters Ave.
Smith has started collecting donations and will accept furniture, electronics, books, clothing, shoes, kitchen supplies, dishes, glassware, movies, CDs, DVDs, tapes, records, children’s items such as clothing, toys, etc., gardening and home repair supplies, holiday decorations, craft supplies and miscellaneous home items such as wall hangings, picture frames and lamps.
“We will be taking donations until April 6. We will have to get everything priced and organized,” Smith said.
All proceeds from the garage sale go to the Cleveland County Historical Society, which is the organization that runs the museum. All donations are tax deductible, Smith said.
“Furniture usually is the really big selling items, so if we could get a lot of furniture, that would make me really happy. I’ve also noticed that books tend to sell really well, so if we could get a lot of books that would be awesome. Craft supplies tend to sell really well,” Smith said. “We’re trying to make as much as we can now because we are going to have to start paying all of our utilities within the next couple of years.
“The city of Norman is being effected by budget cuts, so these are just changes that need to be made. That is affecting all properties owned by the city. So this money would help us tremendously going toward our utility costs.”
Those interested can drop off donations at the museum during regular business hours, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Smith said she would make special arrangements for items to be dropped off, if necessary.
The Moore-Lindsay Historical House, which is a property owned by the city of Norman, is expected to close Tuesday for a slight face-lift on the first floor of the museum.
“All of the plaster is going to be repaired. All of the cracks and all of the holes in the plaster. All of the wallpaper is coming down as well, and we are having all of the wallpaper replaced by professionals,” Smith said.
Smith is hoping the renovations will be complete before the garage sale.
“They are supposed to only take one month for renovation. The full month of March is what we are shooting for, but that is kind of a tentative date. We’ll do everything we can to be open by then (April 13),” Smith said.
For the remainder of February, Smith and volunteers will be busy packing up items on the first floor and placing them in storage.
“We will start packing up all of our collections, moving all our furniture. And beginning around the first week of March, they would like to start the work,” Smith said. “I will be at the museum office, so I can visit with people if they have any questions. We won’t be able to give tours for awhile, obviously.”
