NORMAN — The Cleveland County Health Department has received a limited shipment of flu vaccines. A walk-in clinic will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the Moore Health Department, 424 S. Eastern in Moore and at the Norman Health Department, 250 12th Ave. NE.
Flu vaccines are available for anyone who wants to be protected from influenza. The Cleveland County Health Department does not have high-dose vaccines available at this time.
The shot is recommended for everyone six months of age and older. Persons at high risk of serious complications from flu are strongly encouraged to get the flu vaccine, including pregnant women and people with asthma, diabetes, chronic heart and lung disease or other chronic conditions.
Parents and family members of babies less than six months of age and people who live with or care for anyone at high risk for complications from the flu, including health care workers, also should get the vaccine.
Influenza vaccine formulation for this year includes two strains different from last year’s flu vaccine, as well as the 2009 H1N1 pandemic strain. Influenza virus samples collected from around the world indicate that these strains of influenza virus are the most likely to cause illness during the upcoming flu season.
The Cleveland County Health Department will be providing flu vaccine on a sliding scale, including no charge for families whose income is less than 185 percent of the federal poverty level, for adults 65 years of age and older, and for children who have no health insurance, are on SoonerCare, are Native American or Alaskan natives, or children whose insurance does not cover vaccines.
Children and adults with health insurance that covers vaccines and those with incomes above 185 percent of the poverty level will be charged $25 for a flu vaccine to cover the cost of the vaccine and the cost of administering the vaccine.
The Cleveland County Health Department accepts cash, checks or credit cards for payment.
In addition to getting a flu vaccination, persons 65 and older and those with chronic health conditions should ask their doctors if they should be vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia, if they have not already received a dose.
Pneumococcal pneumonia is a common and potentially serious complication of the flu. Unlike the influenza vaccine, the pneumococcal vaccine does not need to be given every year.
