Red Room to host public events

NORMAN — The Red Room Event Center on Main Street has opened its doors to the public and will no longer exclusively serve private parties.

Dorothy and Eric Mason, new owners of Red Room, will still make the event center available for private parties such as birthdays, fraternity or sorority events and wedding events but will soon be holding events for the public.

“We wanted to give Norman something different,” Dorothy Mason said. “There’s not a lot of nightlife downtown and we wanted to offer more to the college scene.”

Public events will take place on the second and fourth weekends of the month. The Red Room’s first second-weekend event will be Thursday with a “Clash of the Comedians” from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. and karaoke to follow.

Friday will include an open floor “retro” night featuring music from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Customers for the night must be 18 to enter and 21 to drink. Saturday will include an open floor “country” night. The Red Room will be open from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on those weekends.

Mason expressed assurance that issues of underaged drinking will not be a problem.

“We’ve put in enough precautions. We will have security in place and it’s our own staff so there shouldn’t be an issue,” she said.

For the fourth weekend of the month, Thursday nights will remain the same with comedians and karaoke. However, Friday will be a “teen” night.

Mason said for teen night they will have full snacks, soda and water. The teen night will include music from a Top 40 playlist.

The fourth Saturday of the month will feature a live band or live entertainment and an open dance floor.

“We’ve been networking with other businesses,” Mason said. “Everyone seems to know Red Room and we’re looking forward to seeing the business grow as a whole.”

With new ownership and new events also came new equipment. Mason said they have updated the lighting and sound system. They also are being sponsored by Land Run Records who she said will sponsor some events and provide live talent and DJ’s.

Special events surrounding holidays will also be held at the Red Room. A New Years Eve bash kicked off a good start for the newly-owned facility and the next big event will be for Mardi Gras.

Mason said Mardi Gras festivities will include an open dance floor on Feb. 9 with elaborate masks and beads. The event will coincide with the Mardi Gras parade. It will be 18 to enter and 21 to drink.
