NEW: Pre-storm blood donations needed

Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) asks that all healthy Oklahomans, ages 17 and older, give blood today or Thursday morning as part of preparedness efforts for the forecasted winter storm.

Presently, adequate blood supplies exist for patients in the 150 medical facilities across the state served exclusively by OBI. However, should weather interrupt donation patterns, a blood shortage could occur. Oklahoma Blood Institute donors provide every drop of life-saving blood used by these hospitals, include all in the metro-Oklahoma City area.

Donating blood, typically, takes about an hour and can be done every 56 days. Those, who can make giving blood a part of their activities today, will help Oklahoma Blood Institute avoid concerns that could arise should the weather impact scheduled blood drives and donors' ability to reach donor centers later in the week.
