A bobcat was recovering from its injuries Tuesday afternoon after it was hit by a vehicle at a Norman intersection earlier in the day.
Norman Police Master Officer Jennifer Newell said police received a report Tuesday morning that someone hit a dog at the Flood Avenue and West Tecumseh Road intersection. The animal was alive. When police arrived at the intersection, they saw it was a bobcat.
Animal Welfare officers were called to the scene.
Amy Jones, City of Norman Animal Welfare, said officers took the animal to the WildCare Foundation of Noble. The animal shelter does not have the facility to house wild cats.
Rondi Large of WildCare said the organization cares for injured or native wild life.
"We're a wildlife rehab center," she said. "Our goal is to release healthy individuals back out to nature."
Large said the cat weighs between 18 and 20 pounds. She's not sure if the animal is male or female.
"It seems to be an adult cat," she said.
Large is taking the bobcat to a veterinarian Tuesday afternoon to be examined.
"They will do some X-rays and get a feel for what's going on with the little guy," she said.
She said the cat was resting inside an animal carrier Tuesday morning at the WildCare site.
"He had some blood from his mouth. It looks like he has some injuries to one side of his head. We're going to let him rest for right now," she said.
Large said it's not unusual to find bobcats in the Norman area.
"They're very timid. They're not going to approach a person," she said.
