Boy arrested for bringing gun to school

NORMAN — A Moore elementary student was arrested Monday morning after taking a loaded handgun to school.

Tanner Ray Jones, 12, was arrested by Oklahoma City police around 10 a.m. at Sky Ranch Elementary School on a felony complaint of possession of a firearm on school grounds, Oklahoma City police Capt. Dexter Nelson said. The sixth grader was taken to the Cleveland County Detention Center after he was apprehended.

Nelson said the incident is still under investigation, but they believe Jones got the handgun — a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol — from his grandfather.

“That’s a pretty large handgun,” Nelson said. “It could hold anywhere from five to seven rounds, and there were six rounds with him in the weapon.”

Nelson said police are investigating why Jones took the gun to school. The report will be presented to the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office. Jones could potentially face additional charges, depending on what else police find during their investigation.

“They have to interview the child and any other witnesses,” Nelson said.

Nelson said Jones showed the weapon to another student, who then alerted someone at the school. Then, the school notified police, Nelson said.

A statement released by Sky Ranch Elementary School stated: “Today a student was arrested by the Oklahoma City Police for bringing a loaded gun onto the school campus at Sky Ranch Elementary School. Personnel at Sky Ranch worked quickly and efficiently to ensure the safety of all students. We will continue to work with the Oklahoma City Police Department during their investigation of this matter.”

The incident is being investigated by the Oklahoma City Police Department’s robbery unit because of the complaint Jones was arrested on, Nelson said.

The elementary school is in the Moore School District in Cleveland County, but this particular school is in Oklahoma City corporate limits, which is why Oklahoma City police responded to the incident, Nelson said.
