NORMAN — Contribution to literacy programs, trees given as gifts
The Norman Sooner Rotary Club will replace trees at Rotary Park and Andrews Park and make a contribution to a Norman Public Schools literacy programs as gifts to the community in celebration of its 25th anniversary.
The purchase of 10 trees, valued at $500 each, will help replace tornado-damaged trees at Rotary Park and Andrews Park, emcee Dick Pryor said when announcing the gift.
The gift of $6,600 to the Norman Public School “Early Birds” program at Adams and Kennedy elementary schools will help equip parents of pre-school children with information and resources they need to support their children’s healthy development and to build a strong foundation for school.
Red Dirt Improv warmed up the crowd for the “Later with Sooner Rotary” show produced and directed by Andy Paden. During the “Later” show, the club’s first president, Chris Tyler, now of Tulsa, delivered the monologue and interviewed charter members Greg Buwick and Lynne Miller. Miller spoke about Sooner Rotary being among the first Rotary clubs to admit women into membership, beginning in 1987.
In a tribute to veterans, Sooner member and Army veteran Jen Tregarthen, holder of a Purple Heart for injuries in Iraq, spoke of her experiences as a part of Sooner Rotary.
Video salutes to Sooner Rotary included Norman business people and a live greeting from Ron Burton, who is traveling on behalf of Rotary International and who will be installed next June as the president of the 1.2 million-member Rotary International. Burton is a member of the Norman Rotary Club and was district governor in 1987 when the Sooner Rotary Club was chartered.
The celebration of the 25th anniversary will continue at the Tuesday morning meeting led by President James Harp and will include formal presentations of the gifts to representatives of the city of Norman and Norman Public Schools, as well as a salute to the nine charter members who remain active in Sooner Rotary Club.
