NORMAN — Noble artist Janey Crain will open her studio to the public each Saturday in November.
Crain has lived in Noble for over 10 years and has taught as a certified Artist in Residence for many of them. Currently, she teaches middle school and high school students where she attempts to broaden their capacity to view things differently.
“I'm not trying to make you an artist,” Crain says to her students, “I'm trying to teach you how to see.” She goes on to explain, “The other side of their brain isn't being used; the compassionate side, the side that doesn't do math. Art teaches you to see.”
Her studio will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. the remaining Saturdays in November. Crain's studio, marked by its purple door, is at 4th and Ash.
Crain bakes goodies to welcome her guests where she showcases her pottery, paintings, fiber and mixed media forms. New items include mixed media art on linen and watercolors. Crain says problems with her knee have “put a kink in” her production, but it isn't obvious when viewing the many stones, pots, balls, bowls and paintings in her studio.
Some are glazed in one color, others in multiples and a favorite trend is slip-trailing decoration-a raised clay-on-clay decoration method which Crain says reminds her of embroidery.
“I embroidered as a child and I wonder if that's what I'm doing with my pots,” Crain says.
Crain works in many forms of the visual arts and has taught classes in simple print making, jewelry and various other art forms over the years. She says she often hears people say they can't draw, but insists that one's own brain is one's worst enemy when it comes to art. Learning to really see what's there makes all the difference.
