Baby is honorary Girl Scout

Norman — Just two days after being born, Emeryck Baleigh Fleming received a mark of distinction. She was named an honorary Girl Scout by the Norman and Noble Service Unit of the Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma.

For several years, Girl Scouts and the Norman Regional Health System have worked together to choose one newborn girl born the week of March 12 to recognize with the honor. Traditionally, the girl born during the week is selected. Fleming was born 4:31 p.m. Tuesday in Norman, said her mother, Kari Fleming, of south Oklahoma City.

“It’s in celebration of Girl Scouts’ national birthday,” said Brenda Powell, a leader for the local Girl Scout troop at Kennedy Elementary. She and her two daughters, Brittney and Brianna Powell, presented a gift basket to the family Thursday at the hospital.

The basket contained essentials for the new parents such as diapers, wipes, lotions, bottles and clothes. One outfit was monogrammed with “honorary Girl Scout baby” so Emeryck Baleigh would have a souvenir of the recognition.

Both of the baby’s parents claimed involvement in scouts in their younger years. Her mother said she’s keeping Girl Scouts as an option for the child to be involved with one day.
