Norman — The two-day ’89er celebration — themed “Rockin’ on the Range” — celebrates the anniversary of the Great Land Run of 1889, which opened the “Unassigned Lands” in Central Oklahoma for settlement April 22, 1889. From wagon roundups to chili cook-offs and live music, the weekend will incorporate a variety of events centered on the new frontier.
Guests can visit the Cleveland County Fairgrounds for a wagon roundup welcoming the Sooner Teamsters and Trail Riders as they end their week-long wagon and horseback journey through Oklahoma. Visitors can listen to their stories of adventure, fatigue and endurance during their seven-day expedition.
Campfire stories aren’t the only entertainment Friday, there also will be live music, food and games for all ages.
The parade, “The Cowboy Way … Gonna Treat You Great,” will be Saturday and will feature — besides the Selmon family — marching bands, costumed characters, candy and gifts.
Those interested in participating in the roundup can download an application online at www.Norman89er.com or pick one up at the Norman Convention & Visitors Bureau, 223 E. Main St.
