Norman — The air traffic control tower at OU’s Max Westheimer Airport in Norman is closed to visitors indefinitely as the Federal Aviation Administration investigates procedures after an incident in New York.
The incident at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York involved an air controller letting his son and daughter radio instructions to five pilots, Walt Strong, administrator of the Norman facility, said.
Strong said this is the policy the FAA chose as it debates its next move. Strong said there wasn’t a specific timeline for when the tower would open to non-official visitors.
“No one was hurt, but it wasn’t the smartest thing ever done,” he said.
