Norman — Nearly three months after 11-year-old Stephanie Wilcoxson was found dead inside her Noble home, the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s Office has concluded that Wilcoxson took her own life, according to an autopsy report.
Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s Office spokeswoman Cherokee Ballard said Wilcoxson died from acute methadone intoxication.
“The manner of death is suicide,” Ballard said.
Stephanie’s mother, Janice Wilcoxson, reported her daughter’s death to Noble police Dec. 23. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation soon took over the investigation.
OSBI officials said there were no visible signs of trauma on Stephanie’s body. Authorities believe Stephanie, a sixth-grader at Curtis Inge Middle School in Noble, had been dead several days before her mother alerted police.
OSBI spokesperson Jessica Brown said the investigation into Wilcoxson’s death is open and active.
“This does not close the investigation,” she said.
Brown said the toxicology report on Wilcoxson will allow law enforcers to intensify their investigation with more pointed questions. Agents will present their findings to Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn.
It will be up to Mashburn to decide whether any criminal charges should be filed in the case, Brown said.
