So no to culture of violence

As a mother, public school teacher and member of humanity, I couldn’t agree more with the article posted by Cindy Merrick and her thoughts on violence in our culture. It saddens me to think of how accepting people are of today’s “entertainment” options.

I rarely go to movies anymore because violence, murder and people with no morals seem to be the stars of just about every blockbuster hit. Television shows and the news are full of murder and graphic violence, shown at all times of day and night. Don’t even get me started on video games, which I believe are a huge contributor to this problem.

Too often, I witness firsthand the statements made by children as young as five about violent acts and things that I believe no child should have in their minds. I wish that no person, of any age, had to live with this burden. For many, it is a daily part of their worlds, whether real or on a screen. What is it going to take for acceptance of violence in our culture, both real and for entertainment value, to stop? I realize that violence in the world has been happening since the earliest of days.

However, I believe that the gradual shift has been the apparent wide-spread acceptance of it. Whether made consciously or unconsciously, violence has nested itself into our daily lives so gradually that it usually doesn’t even receive a raised eyebrow anymore.

I’ll continue to pray for the end of violence in our world and make a concerted effort to avoid “entertainment” of every form that promotes violence. Won’t you join me?
