As Bravo Company 2nd Battalion of the Oklahoma National Guard prepares for deployment to Iraq, we, as family members, are more sensitive to the concerns facing troops in harms way. Even before they leave, we are already planning for a reunion. We have been "briefed" on pre-deployment activities and suggestions have been given for making soldiers' absences less stressful. A jar filled with candy Kisses -- "a kiss a day while Dad's away," is clever. A personalized bracelet to be worn until our son returns might make a mom feel more connected. We will try it all.
Whether we agree with the war or not, our soldiers must feel our support. They and their families sacrifice much. A year away from a parent can be an eternity to a child. Seeing the 10 Black Hawk helicopters flying in formation over our state Oct. 6 headed for Fort Sill, then to Iraq, was bittersweet. Pride and sadness become familiar emotions and we know God hears our prayers for our loved ones wherever they may be. This poem is dedicated to our American soldiers and their loved ones.
Let the eagle fly
Miles from home,
In a far-off land
With weapons and courage,
And a brotherhood band.
You fight the unknown
From morning 'til night --
Unsure of the enemy,
Yet ready to fight.
With faith in the Father
And loyalty to our land
You face each day
Unsure where you stand.
You are a soldier
Called to defend;
You Iay down your life
Until the battle's end.
And a country prays
As the enemy destroys.
And a nation unites,
As another soldier deploys.
We will continually pray
For your safety and mission,
Knowing war is ugly
And not your decision.
We owe you a debt
We can not repay
Just know God is with you
As all Christians pray.
God, unite our hearts;
Let pride fill our spirit
May the Battle Hymn echo,
Let us long to hear it.
May OId Glory remind us
What is precious and blest
That America is strong
When put to the test.
May pride well up,
And tears stream down
When the anthem is played
And the freedom bells sound.
Let's thank every soldier,
And not question why.
They're fighting for justice
So the eagle can fly!
