NORMAN — Discerning readers might be forgiven for skipping the front page story report of the democratic candidates forum bearing the headline “Democrats talk medical weed, ObamaCare” (July 22). It might as well have read “Hippie Socialists plot to gain control of HD 44”.
Yes, the issue of medical marijuana was raised, but it was the subject of one question in a 90-minute forum. And, yes, health care reform was discussed, but the Transcript must be aware that ObamaCare is a pejorative to describe what many feel is an important and valuable legislative effort.
This particular headline seems designed to elicit a sneering disregard for an otherwise fairly reported story.
In a political climate as deeply polarized as Oklahoma’s, newspapers bear a particular responsibility to avoid the appearance of bias. I’m afraid that, on this occasion, the Transcript failed in that duty.
