Theft fueled by irrational fear

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

In a seemingly unpatriotic and cowardly act, someone stole my Obama/Biden sign and the two American flags attached to the sign in my yard in west Norman. This person evidently had the irrational fear that my sign may swing this red state, where only 34 percent voted for President Obama in 2008, to blue for Obama.

While such an irrational fear may seem idiotic, it’s consistent with the fears evident in many ways the past few years:

· That the current administration’s annual federal spending — which pulling out of a recession has gone from $3.1 to 3.7 trillion, a 20 percent increase that has leveled off the last two years — is somehow catastrophically worse than the prior administration’s 63 percent increase from $1.9 to $3.1 trillion;

· That our 401Ks are evidently growing too fast under the current administration (Dow Jones up 68 percent in just three-and-a-half years since taking office) and is not preferrable to the previous administration’s performance (Dow Jones DOWN 24 percent over the eight years;

· That policies that, thus far, have consistently produced modest increases in private jobs of 100,000-200,000 per month after the deepest recession since the Great Depression are somehow to be feared much more than the policies of the previous administration that, at last glance, left us hemorrhaging 800,000 jobs a month;

· That the current ability to go to a bank and obtain a loan or a mortgage is somehow outrageously more scary than in late 2008 when those banks, along with your money in them, were going under all together.

This theft of my personal property was quite ironic, given that several feet away, we also had a yard sign advertising the church my family attends. That sign was left untouched. I’m sure Jesus is quite pleased with the thief’s selective sinful theft.

While this theft amounts to about $10 ( a $5 sign and $5 for the stolen American flags ... stolen American flags — what a patriot), which I’ll have to fork over to replace, I will begrudgingly do so to subsidize this person’s theft in the same manner that blue states have to consistently subsidize red states for their socialistic dependence on the blue state’s hard-earned taxable income.
