Where is the courage?

Norman — Editor, The Transcript:

The Republican attitude toward health care seems to be, “I’ve got mine, too bad about yours.” And the Democrats are doing their thumb-twiddling routines, perfected by both houses of Congress. Where is LBJ when we need him?

The most egregious aspect of this dithering is that to begin is not to finish. Just start and add changes later.

To proclaim our own agenda while some die from lack of care is neither patriotic nor worthy of us as a nation.

Vice-President Cheney seems glad to receive the best health care in the world. Its cost would be depressing, so please, don’t tell me. But, I am contributing to it and wish him well, but not on my dime. His life is no more valuable or meaningful than that of my neighbor.

Some time ago I read that Mrs. (Barbara) Bush had eye surgery, paid for by Medicare (another of my dimes). These two probably could have paid their bills with lunch money. And ordinary citizens are doing the begging. Remember the French Revolution, Congress. People do eventually rise up.

The cost of health care could be handled as Congress handled many vital expenses during World War II… price controls. Although quite young I heard political discussions. There were insults and cries of pain as FDR was called a dictator and a socialist. But he did pretty well and some Republicans who helped did, too. That was courageous. And courage is sadly lacking today in Congress.
