Kaleidoscope helps with grief

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

According to a 2000 report by the Social Security Administration, an estimated 3.5 percent of children under the age of 18 in the United States have experienced the death of a parent.

Unfortunately, Norman is not immune to the loss caused by death in a family.

When a death occurs, adults are often unsure of how to help their child or teen. Some parents seek help from outside sources.

Kaleidoscope Grief Support Inc. is a nonprofit agency in Norman whose mission is “to provide peer support in a safe and understanding environment for children and their families who are grieving the death of a loved one.”

This agency has been serving the needs of grieving children in Cleveland and McClain counties for six years.

Children meet in support groups with trained volunteer facilitators while their parent or guardian meets in an adult group.

The groups meet year-round and are available at no cost to participants.

Because of its dependence on grants and donations to continue its service to the community, Kaleidoscope is hosting its second annual fundraiser, “Delights and Desserts.”

The event will be 7 p.m. Monday at The Depot, 200 S. Jones Ave.

Oklahoma singer/songwriter Beau Jennings will present excerpts from his documentary film, “The Verdigris: In Search of Will Rogers.”

The presentation will include original music performed by Beau, which chronicles the life of Will Rogers. Local bakeries and restaurants will provide desserts.

Tickets are $30 and are available at the door or by calling 306-0052.
