Man charged with killing mother at Cleveland County home

NORMAN — First degree murder charges were filed in District Court Monday against a Cleveland County man accused of killing his mother.

Gerald David Hume was arrested after an 11-hour standoff with police on Wednesday. Officers found the body of Hume’s mother, Janet Kay Hume, inside the home.

Gerald Hume, 52, is charged with murder in the first degree, two counts of feloniously pointing a firearm and desecration of a body after allegedly shooting Janet Kay Hume, 77.

Janet Hume was reported missing since Nov. 6 by a family member on Nov. 11, according to the probable cause affidavit filed with the charges. Gerald Hume told police his mother was on a trip, though her car was in his driveway at 11000 S. Bryant in Oklahoma City. He refused to let police enter the residence.

Police obtained a search warrant on Nov. 13, and after an 11-hour negotiation with Gerald Hume, entered the residence. He was arrested after a brief struggle, according to a court filing.

Police discovered Janet Hume’s body in a southeast bedroom, according to the affidavit. During negotiations, Gerald Hume stated he had shot his mother in the chest. He was arrested and transported to Cleveland County jail where he remains in custody. He was expected to be arraigned Monday.
