Shelter ahead of schedule

NORMAN — The Tevis Group Architects will report to the Norman City Council this week on the status of the Animal Welfare renovation project. If the design gets the thumbs up from the council, the group will move into the development of architectural plans.

On Nov. 8, 2011, Norman voters approved a general obligation bond to construct a new Norman Animal Welfare facility. Following that vote, a multi-disciplinary committee comprised of city staff and Animal Welfare Oversight Committee members reviewed the qualifications of architectural applicants.

Tevis was selected for the project by the city council based on the committee’s recommendation.

The Tevis Group has visited the site and met with the review committee to discuss concepts and workflow plans. In addition, the Norman Police Department asked the Tevis Group about the possibility of constructing an “attached but isolated canine holding area” for animals and related equipment owned by the police department, according to city staff reports.

If the police canine portion of the project moves forward, none of the general obligation funds committed to the original remodel will be used. Rather, a separate request for funds will be presented to the city council.

According to staff reports, Tevis estimates the architectural plans will be complete by the end of March and the city can move forward with bidding the construction of the project two months ahead of the original timeline estimates.

The construction phase is expected to take 10 months, and the total project could be competed by July 1, 2014, according to city staff reports.
