Traffic blocked for hours as police investigate scene of fatal six-car pileup

NORMAN — A six-car pileup Tuesday morning left two dead, two more injured and blocked traffic for more than five hours.

The accident was reported about 7 a.m. near Flood Avenue and Tecumseh Road. Flood was closed to traffic from the intersection, north to the Interstate 35 merge ramp.

About 7 a.m. a vehicle traveling south on Flood crossed into the northbound lanes colliding with other vehicles, according to preliminary reports from Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley.

Five additional vehicles were involved in the subsequent crash, police said.

Police said two men were dead at the scene. They were described in their 20s to early 30s.

The identities of the deceased were not released, but Easley did say one of the drivers was military personnel.

No children were in any of the vehicles involved.

Two other individuals were sent to the hospital for injuries they suffered, and were released later Tuesday afternoon.

“Search warrants have been issued, and there were a lot of witnesses to this accident, it’s a big one,” Easley said.

Flood Avenue remained closed to traffic for about 5 hours for investigation and clean up and was reopened after 1 p.m.
