Alleged co-conspirator in Burton murder case apprehended

NORMAN — A man who was being sought as an alleged co-conspirator in the Patrick Burton homicide that occurred Feb. 13 was apprehended Friday night by a Cleveland County Sheriff’s deputy assigned to the U.S. Marshal Service’s Central Metro Fugitive Taskforce.

Justin Tyler Dewberry was apprehended at 6:40 p.m. in a traffic stop at I-40 and Sunny Lane in Del City.

Last week, District Attorney Greg Mashburn filed charges in Cleveland County District Court against Mary Courtney Cheyenne York, 19, and Christopher Cody King, 24, for allegedly killing Burton, 51, on Feb. 13.

Firefighters responded to a fire at Burton’s residence, 619 Villa Drive at 11 a.m. on Feb. 13, to find heavy smoke coming from a roof vent. Burton’s burned remains were found in the home. The Chief Medical Examiner determined Burton died from a gunshot wound prior to the fire being set.

Police reports indicate the home had been ransacked and several items, including the victim’s pickup, were missing. The police investigation linked York to Burton.

During the alleged robbery, King was reported to have shot Burton, then is believed to have moved the body, doused it with accelerant and started the fire to destroy evidence, according to the police report.

King, accompanied by York, used the victim’s credit cards at Riverwind Casino and the couple were caught on video, prosecutors allege. At that time, Dewberry and another person were identified as persons of interest.

York and King are charged with arson and the first degree murder of Burton.

King is also charged with larceny of a motor vehicle. York and King are being held in the Cleveland County jail, according to Sheriff’s Office detention records.
