Scout’s Eagle project gathers items for troops

NORMAN — A Norman teenager recently partnered with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department on his Eagle Scout Service Project and ended up collecting more than 1,000 pounds of snacks, games, DVDs, books and personal items to send to U.S. Marines serving in Afghanistan.

John Ransom Lovett, an 8th grader at Whittier Middle School and member of Boy Scout Troop 217, gathered the items with help from the sheriff’s department, the McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church Marine Corps Veterans organization and other donors.

Lovett, the son of John and Mary Ann Lovett, was inspired to select this project from his father’s story about a Red Cross gift bag he received in 1972 when he was overseas in the military.

Lovett joined Cub Scouts in first grade. As a member of Troop 217, he has served as patrol leader, troop guide, troop historian, quartermaster and hiking instructor. Lovett is a graduate of the National Youth Leadership Training, the Order of the Arrow and has 41 merit badges.

He has 60 days of camping with the Boy Scouts and has attended four summer camps at Slippery Falls Scout Ranch near Tishomingo. His Eagle Board of Review is scheduled in February.
