NORMAN — Monday evening’s meeting was a look ahead on several fronts as the Norman Board of Education addressed the interior design plan for the Administrative Services Center project, the 2013 meeting schedule, a resolution for voters to select a new board member and ongoing teacher training.
Mike Tower, of Locke Wright Pruitt & Brown, gave board members a first look at the new additions to the Administrative Services Center, scheduled to be completed in June.
Using computer-generated illustrations, Tower showed board members what their new meeting space will look like from an insider’s perspective, touching on details such as color scheme, carpeting and placement of amenities like conference room coffee bars and audience accessibility in the board meeting room for award presentations.
“We’re trying to make sure we can step up in certain aspects but maintain enough simplicity to get good bids,” Tower said.
The board approved the presented interior design plan, accounting for $820,000, with the overall project weighing in at approximately $3.6 million. The Adminstrative Services Center project is the final facilities expansion/remodel in the 2009 Bond Issue.
Beth Spears, NPS director of staff development and student achievement, presented board members with an overview of numerous staff development programs recently completed or still ongoing in the district.
After hiring 170 new teachers to the Norman district at the beginning of the school year, Spears touched on the variety of inductions and annual re-certifications that NPS teachers are experiencing to improve instruction and preparedness.
“When I prepared this presentation, it was originally 300-plus pages long, documenting professional development, which has just taken place to date. Norman is known for growing its teachers and tailoring development to meet individual schools’ needs,” Spears said.
Board members also approved 2013 meeting dates following the bi-monthly model used thus far.
Members also will place before voters the task of filling board position 3 — soon to be vacated by Darry Stacy — in February.
