United Way announces campaign chairs

NORMAN — OG+E Community Relations professionals James Chappel and John Koons will head this year’s fundraising campaign for the United Way of Norman, the organization announced Friday.

Though the campaign goal has yet to be determined, Chappel and Koons are confident this year will be as successful as the 2012 campaign, which hit its goal of more than $2 million.

“I’m kind of a United Way fan,” Chappel joked. “I believe in what we’re trying to get done, I really like the idea of contributing to an agency that helps other agencies and helps disperse contributions over many needs. One person can’t volunteer for all the needs we have but United Way can use your personal contribution to aid a lot of different things.”

Chappel serves OG+E as Community Affairs Manager and Koons serves OG+E as Community Relations Coordinator. Both Chappel and Koons have been involved with United Way for 33 years and 16 years, respectively.

“I’m nervous and a little overwhelmed but very excited,” Koons said. “James will be wonderful and I hope I can pull through. We’ll give it our best.”

OG+E is a major supporter of United Way, and Chappel and Koons have been central to campaign fundraising within the company.

“We’re thrilled to have James and John as our 2013 campaign chairs, we look forward to a very successful drive this fall,” said Norman President Kristin Collins in a release.

Chappel said that he feels he and Koons will bring some motivational energy to the campaign for both potential donors and pacesetters.

“We’re confident we’ll get there and have fun doing so,” Chappel said.
