Norman — Representatives of 12 Greek chapters at the University of Oklahoma got together recently to help the cause of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma.
The students raised more than $4,500 to support the Cleveland County BBBS office through the 24th annual Miss University of Oklahoma White Rose Pageant Tuesday at the Sooner Theatre. The event, which featured contestants from 11 local sororities, was put on by Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
“The men of Lambda Chi Alpha want to support the local community and can think of no better way than to help provide the children of Norman with positive mentors through Big Brothers Big Sisters,” said Courtlyn Shoate, event chairman.
The men of the fraternity not only supported BBBS through fundraising efforts, but also had the opportunity to become Big Brothers through the community and school programs.
Whitney Nelms of Kappa Alpha Theta was crowned Miss White Rose. She is a member of the OU pom squad and the Kappa Alpha Theta education team.
The first runner-up was Lisa Ann Schaefer, Alpha Omicron Pi, and second runnerup was Kelley Jones, Pi Beta Phi.
The other participants and their sororities were: Jessica Barrera, Chi Omega; Kate Brandon, Delta Gamma; Sarah Bramlett, Delta Delta Delta; Katie Dark, Alpha Chi Omega; Olivia Palmisano, Gamma Phi Beta; Courtney Nevin, Alpha Phi; Caitlin Wetmore, Alpha Gamma Delta; and Carly Cox, Kappa Kappa Gamma.
