UW plans second No Shave November

NORMAN — It’s part of almost every man’s morning routine. Slather on some shaving cream. Pick up your razor. Try not to cut yourself as you slide it across your face while you’re half asleep. I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way, at least for the month of November.

United Way of Norman will hold its second annual No Shave November next month, and they’re recruiting participants now. Supporters can put down their razor and shun shaving for the entire month.

“No Shave November is a time when men can be men and help those who need it most,” said No Shave November Chair Kris Glenn. “Bearded brethren can come together to raise money for a good cause.”

Here’s how it works. Everyone starts their stubble after a clean shave on November 1. Each participant will then ask fans of their facial hair to support United Way of Norman by making a donation on their personal fundraising website.

Each week, participants will send in a picture of their beard to keep everyone updated on their progress. Then when the month is over, everyone will meet again to see who has the best beard and who raised the most money.

“It’s a great excuse to get scruffy,” said No Shave November coordinator Jed Dembowski. “But it’s really about more than that. Last year, this event raised enough money to fund an entire program. So these guys are really making a difference.”

No Shave November brought in more than $17,000 last year, and that was with only 40 men signing up. The goal this year is to get at least 100 men involved.

“We need more men to lend a beard to those in need,” said Glenn. “Together we can help a struggling mother buy groceries, help a senior have a more independent life and help those with mental illness get back into society.”
