NORMAN — City of Norman traffic crews will be changing speed limit signs at three locations starting Monday.
A recent speed study requested by residents living along 108th Avenue NE south of Alameda Street showed that a reduction in the speed limit is justified, officials said.
The previous 50 mph limit will be changed to 35 mph, as justified by the speed study and inspection of the area.
The segment of Tecumseh Road between 108th Avenue NE and 120th Avenue NE recently was paved for the first time, so the previous 35 mph speed limit, which was appropriate and necessary because the roadway used to have gravel surface, is no longer feasible.
The speed limit will raised to 50 mph.
The segment of 24th Avenue SE, from Classen Boulevard to Cedar Lane Road will have its speed limit lowered to 40 mph from 50 mph.
According to a news release from the city, this segment of the road recently was improved and designated as an “urban arterial,” which is meant to “better reflect the new environment, area character and roadway design.”
Changes in speed limit are necessary in order to respond to resident requests, new development or roadway changes, officials said, with speed limit changes typically being done on an annual basis.
