Traffic light conversions expected to help motorists

NORMAN — Starting this week, Norman motorists should begin to see a change with traffic control.

Over the next several weeks the city of Norman will begin to convert 57 traffic lights at intersections where flashing yellow arrows are applicable. The city already has a total of 17 intersections operating with at least one flashing yellow arrow.

A new project utilizing 100 percent Federal Safety Funds kicked off last week to upgrade the remaining 57 intersections.

Nine of the locations will create new opportunities for left-turning traffic.

For example, motorists on Lindsey Street at McGee Drive will receive new flashing yellow arrows which means the ability to turn on a green arrow only will be enhanced, allowing motorists to turn through gaps in traffic during those off-peak times.

The upgrade project will provide more flexible, safer traffic conditions for motorists at specific intersections across the city stated a city of Norman press release.

The release stated that some of the conversions are more complicated and time consuming than others. Regardless, the end product will be significant to the Norman driving experience, city officials said.

The Norman City Council approved an ordinance in January 2011 that recognized the flashing yellow arrow as a means of traffic control to address left-turn phasing at signalized intersections. Since then, the city has been exploring opportunities to introduce the new technology in Norman.

Traffic control for motorists through these intersections will be provided by Traffic Signals, Inc., which is the contractor selected for the project.
