Rerun Junction honored by city

NORMAN — This year’s Human Rights award will honor an organization rather than an individual. The Norman City Council will recognize ReRun Junction at it’s 6:30 p.m. meeting tonight in the City Council Chambers.

ReRun Junction is a thrift store at 325 E. Comanche that provides employment opportunities to adults with developmental disabilities. Between 10-15 employees of ReRun Junction have a degree of independence and gain a greater sense of self worth through working, taking responsibility, and paying taxes.

“ReRun Junction provides a sense of purpose to a population that might otherwise feel disenfranchised, and opportunities for social engagement that benefits both the individual and our community,” writes Lisa Schmidt in her nomination letter to the Norman Human Rights Commission. “I can think of no more deserving organization to recognize with this award than the hardworking and committed individuals, both staff and employees, at ReRun Junction.”

The Norman Human Rights Commission is charged with promoting and encouraging “fair treatment and mutual understanding among all citizens and to combat all prejudice, bigotry, and discrimination that prevent individuals from reaching their full potential as human beings,” according to the award to be presented by the mayor on Tuesday night.

ReRun Junction has been open for around four years. The thrift store provides gently used items at values families can afford. Job coaches work with employees to help them stay on task and accomplish their goals.
