City disposal for oil and grease

NORMAN — The FOG program is for residential customers and includes only cooking grade fats, oils and grease, not petroleum products.

Fats, oils and grease, when dumped into the sewer system eventually thicken and stick to the walls of the sewer pipes.  As it builds up in the sewer pipes it chokes the flow and eventually clogs the pipe altogether. 

Instead of dumping holiday cooking fats, Norman residents are asked to take old cooking oils, animal fats and meat grease to the Transfer Station to be recycled.  

“This service is free and the best environmental alternative for FOG,” said Debbie Smith, Environmental Services Coordinator for the Utilities Department. 

The Sewer Line Maintenance Division attributes about one emergency stoppage per month to the buildup of FOG. 

“This is the perfect time to remind people of this valuable program,” Smith said.  “With the holiday season, comes a lot of extra holiday cooking.  And, now you have a proper place to dispose of the used oils and grease that can come from turkey fryers and such.” 

The 300-gallon recycling unit is located at the Sanitation Department’s Transfer Station at 3901 South Chautauqua and is free to residential customers from Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
